Angelique Kidjo is one of the founders of the Batonga Foundation for Girls Education in Africa

During her many trips on the African continent, Angelique has realized that secondary education is crucial for young girls. It prevents them from getting married at an early age and allows them to change the future of Africa. Along with Mary Louise Cohen and John Philips, she founded The Batonga Foundation whose name is inspired by one of her famous songs.

Batonga’s mission is to support both secondary school and higher education for girls in Africa. We are doing this by granting scholarships, building secondary schools, increasing enrollment, improving teaching standards, providing school supplies, supporting mentor programs, exploring alternative education models and advocating for community awareness of the value of education for girls.
